Do any of you have neurodivergent characters, whether they be on the spectrum, have a mental illness or mood disorder? I was thinking of giving one of the girls from Monster Deeto a disability, but was scared of how she would be received. There have been a lot of diverse characters in fanime, though I've personality never come across one that wasn't neurotypical.
How would you guys feel about a character with a mental disability or illness? What would you like to see avoided and what do you want to see? Are there any examples that you can think of, whether good or bad, of neurodivergent fanime characters?

Well I do have a character in a Magical Girl story who has Aspergers, but she has been like freaking trained to be part of society. (Though, there still some things that are bothering her like LOUD NOISES.)
I do think I may have Mokoko and Hirtemio might have a disability in a way but I can't really put my finger on it (yet.), boo boo. =3=;

I totally encourage people to have more characters with neurodivergent qualities 100%! Having more representation to other groups of people is always an okay thing with me.
As for my characters, Justine and Daniel have some form of depression to each respective extent and James ( a character introduced in my series later ) has ADHD alongside a physical disability later (lol dem spoilers).
I don't think I have any examples with me offhand but erm... . . I guess make sure it's shown enough so people notice but not blatantly stated? Avoid the " I'm this way because of _____!" talk because it will come off as forced. Like if you have a character with depression that you want the viewers to KNOW about, make the symptoms obvious.

Without giving away any spoilers, one of my characters is mildly schizophrenic. Another one has a physical disability. But like MelancholicDove's, the disability doesn't come until later.
I would assume Maddie suffers from some form of depression due to being put in a situation completely opposite of a normal person her age, but it's not technically canon, though it could be implied in some situations. She just doesn't let it shine through her over-bubbly personality.

Serenity is clinically depressed. It's not exactly a spoiler because it actually is something that happens throughout the series -- Serenity going to therapy. Hydrangea is depressed, but is coping with it in a much better way than her cousin, Serenity is. Amy has general anxiety disorder and a mild depression (will reveal more later on in the series about her). Michelle is also going through mental health issues right now (more will be revealed about her later on in the series). Everyone else I haven't really thought of/don't have neurodivergent qualities to them.
