Although we consider ourselves artists, what would we really want others to call us? Being called an artist doesn't really say much in this day and age. An artist used to go under the assumption that you were a low-income earning individual who drew pictures as a way of surviving, thus is not the case anymore. Now it could mean just about anything, maybe they're a musician, computer programmer, nascar driver, garbage collector, prosititue or even a gigolo. To sum it up, the title and meaning of the word "artist" has been thoroughly tainted by social norms; but that's a different discussion altogether.
What really makes less sense is why a majority of "artists" don't like to be categorized as drawers. Isn't that what we do? Or does the sound of "Oh, look at me I'm inking" sound more pretentious? What's so bad about being categorized as a drawer? Sure, opening and closing drawers is a simple task but why compare them in the first place. One could change the word drawing with other terms such as painting, coloring, tracing, penciling, graphicing, and the list goes on; but wouldn't that be a bit more technical? Besides some of these terms already have a corresponding profession.
Long story short, as an animator or an artist in general; How would you description your talent in one word, if an alien were to ask you right now? The alien can read your mind. So overthinking will result in them blowing up the your planet.
Alien: So you call yourself an artist heh? *BIG EXPLOSION*
