There's a type of meme that had circled around on deviantArt and still does to this day that encourages you to take an old picture of yours and re-draw it now that the previous one was several years old. You're supposed to make the same picture (or what the picture was supposed to be when you originally drew it) and draw it once more to see what you've improved upon, how it looks and so on. It's neat and fun, and certainly inspiring to those around you (or so I find)! So I wanted to kind of bring this in here but in a different way. A lot of the people on the forums are "fanimators", so seeing as a good portion of them are ones from back in duh day (5+ years ago), I'd like to see you all take a still from your fanime (or if you never had an episode or op/ed, just use a picture) that you made and re-draw it. Try and keep as many features the same while still implementing your current style. Try using one of the oldest ones for more hilarity! Even if you don't have a fanime currently, or it isn't that old, just take some old art of an original character of yours and redraw it! I think it'd be awesome to try and draw it in the same program or using the same method as you did back when you originally drew it! Here's an example and my first take on this: Even though this character, Mina Shirogane, has been re-designed and thrown into a completely different universe now, I'm sticking with the original design for this. I recreated the (gross) background, made a shadow beneath her, had her hair the same and kept her outfit the same as well. While I tried to stick as much to the original pose as I could, it was kind of difficult, seeing as the pose is physically impossible. As of such, I had to improvise and come up with a pose of which was similar somewhat. I tried to keep the colors the same, but some of them looked awful together so I changed it a bit to make it a little more matching. I used binary which is the same tool MS Paint uses, which is what the original drawing was done in. Though I now have a tablet and I used Paint Tool SAI for a couple things, I still tried to maintain that smooth but still slightly pixelated look. I'm kind of addicted to it. Anyway, enough chatter! Let's see what you come up with, or what you think of other people's comparisons.

Luckily I saved this one picture that was dated a long time ago. Its just a doodle that I made on a purple paper in class back in January 3rd 2006, and now a doodle that I redrew in May 18th 2014. I'm... really not exactly sure why I made this, but I think its supposed to be a deadly robot of some kind. This is an 8+ years difference. whoa...

Drew it again! Anyway, I did just the cel shading technique I use when animating, although I went a bit more into detail with the lighting. I couldn't bear to use their original designs I'm sorry sob Kenshiro's especially is SO BAD why does he have white sweatpants??? And pointy hair?? This scene is super different than even the new one (it basically doesn't exist anymore) but I tried to stick to what was happening in the old one, except if I actually could conceive of things better 10 years ago haha. They're still on an empty field doing whatever they're doing. So.. yeah. Drew it again, 10 years later. I kinda want to actually digitally paint the new one rather than just cel shading, I'm considering it haha

I kinda want to actually digitally paint the new one rather than just cel shading, I'm considering it haha Man, that new one is absolutely gorgeous. For some reason, it sets EXTREMELY well on my eyes. I saw the close up preview and was instantly hypnotized... But seeing the whole thing just confirms that it's something that should hypnotize me. But I can't quite explain why. Maybe it's the combination of the colors and where they are placed... maybe it's the lighting... or maybe it's the blur effect you used. It's absolutely gorgeous. Plus, the angle really gives the image motion. Everything is beautifully done. I'm really impressed. This is something I can see as a print. In fact, if I got the money and you sold it as a print, I would probably buy it. ------------ And the amount of improvement everybody has shown is just beyond words. It's amazing how much difference a few years can make. Wow, everybody has learned so much. Maybe I should do one of these as well. In fact, I plan on doing so. Anyways, I'm done rambling on. *Shuffles away*

So, um I tried this thing. The first image is from the [Project: Unknown] prologue. The file says it was made...July 9th 2012 o-o The second one I made today, which is how I'd have drawn it now (except I forgot Cinna's markings, but eh, whatever). Coloring/shading negative really tricked my brain haha.

This is 7 years difference. The original was done in 2007. I think in the original GMM story there was a part where the aliens created a machine that would turn humans into aliens but they accidentally chose one of the mews to test it on. It was stupid but I do like the way the newer version turned out. I couldn't bring myself to shade it in the original way, it just wouldn't look good that way. I tried to stick with the original as best as I could but I couldn't bear that terrible neon green color, especially for the boots. I don't even know what I was trying to do with the shirt on the old one.

Old Version Completed in December 2011. Edit: Actually, 2009... New version completed on May 26, 2014. New version without tape. (Which shows more detail in the boots.) I think the tape is kind of cool, but a little distracting. It would work as an animation frame, but this is just a picture. About two four and a half years of experience. I've learned so much online.... Also, I couldn't bring myself to drawing Naoko's hair in the old style. It was terrible. Plus the boots.... =/ And the background...

I happened to like the brown hair :I LOL
But that looks great, and the BG is a definite improvement! Great job! I was aiming to participate today, but unfortunately I had a horrible day full of power outages, wiped PS3s, and then getting wrapped up watching ALL MY OWN CRUMMY ANIMATIONS trying to pick a frame. XD!
I think I finally picked one though... maybe... Though now I have been slapped with the feels of abandoned projects that may have to be poked at again.
@ashley That looks so much better XD! Great job!
