There are plenty of writing programs about, especially ones like Microsoft Word.
Personally, I use Word and Scrivener! Word is good for smaller things like short stories, while Scrivener is perfect for organizing, planning, and long-term writing. It even has a built-in script-writing feature! ((That's what I'm using to write my Fanime :3))
For smaller ideas or even outlining, I also like to use OneNote and Evernote :3
So, what do you use?

I use Scrivener too! It's helped a lot in keeping me organized, like you said. Before I switched to Scrivener, I used Word and Evernote a lot. I don't use Word so much anymore but I still use Evernote for writing stuff that isn't related to any of my current projects.
The fact that Evernote is backed up on the internet and you can log into your account and get your writing from another computer is very handy.

I highly suggest Celtx for script writing. It's fantastic and makes things very easy.

I use google docs. It makes sharing really easy and pretty much has all the capabilities of word but it's totally free.

I use Google Docs to share stuff with people (eg the final script for Serenity Chronicles after I cast) and Word for the more private stuff. I used to use yWriter, which is similar to Scrivener, but I'm just like "I'd rather have Scrivener." So I deleted it.

Wordpad is what I use, though I copy everything to Google Docs. I have two computers so it's helpful to have my scripts and plotlines available on both.
