I use Pencil 2D for animation and coloring and Windows Movie Maker for editing. I use ImageReady when I feel like drawing (it's a thing that came with Photoshop idk why).
Method: Frame by frame but I can't/don't know how to do storyboards so I like to wing it
*sigh* I need better programs ((I want Paint Tool Sai! Everyone has it!))

Uh, well, I haven't animated anything yet, but the plan is to draw frames in SAI and compile them in Vegas (12 frames per second, maybe do the whole 24 when I'm feeling feisty). That sounds like a bit of a pain in the ass though because there's no way to check my frames in motion until I put them in Vegas. I could use layers to simulate an onion skin but not having any kind of playback just seems like a bad idea. Plus that fudges the idea of separate color layers. Any advice??
I've never storyboarded or keyframed anything in the past, but I'm going to try it out. I think planning the action is more useful for this kind of thing than it was in my old stickfigure animations.
I downloaded Pencil just for random screwing around. I think it could be a nice program if it was more fully featured.

I don't think there's going to be any updates anymore.

Apparently the original developers dropped it and then some other guys picked it up. It says the last update was in July of 2013 and it's still in beta. It's had a hard life. There's a lot of nice freeware out there so it's a shame there's not much to choose from in the way of animation and video editing. And shareware licenses for those cost an obscene amount of money!! In fact, I'm not even sure what a professional 2D animation studio would use for animating things. ToonBoom?? Custom software?

I use a combo of SAI and Premiere Pro. For backgrounds, I sometimes use Illustrator because I just love how everything functions as movable objects rather than images. I've also experimented with Flash and had the opportunity to use Toon Boom at school!

It's a mixed bag for me. I like Blender, but try to make my characters as traditionally 2D as I can. I'd hand draw if I had the time but I don't. It's the same with the backgrounds I use, clip art, photos taken, 3D objects. A mixture of Vue and and Gimp to create a hand painted look to my work, then anime studio (for lip synch) and anime studio or Blender for compositing. It all seems pretty complex but the system works for me.

Just letting you know that there's a program to help you look at the frames in motion before putting them into Vegas! paperseverywhere.tumblr.com/post/77822393571/sai-animation-assistant

I'm very picky about my line art and the only program I've tried that I think it looks nice in is sai. Adobe products make gross line Dx however, I want to get into vector animation so I might try drawing assets in sai and exporting them into flash, which I've dabbled a little bit with before. Advice?
