Thorns _______A Fantasy Adventure_______
There was an old story passed down through the years of a shining beacon that pierced the clouds to bring people together in times of severe crisis. The light shone from the highest tower of an ancient castle, and was said to be visible for hundreds of miles. It had been over a hundred years since anyone had lit the beacon, and today the great Granite Castle was dormant, standing alone in an abandoned territory where the world had forgotten it. Now sheltered amongst the crumbling halls of the massive fortress, Anden stared into the torch in his hand. If legend was to be believed, now more than ever this needed to be done. If this fabled gathering of heroes could be enacted... maybe the world would have a chance. Anden closed his eyes and thrust the torch into the base of the beacon. The tower fired to life with an explosion of power, throwing Anden off his feet completely. He winced, and slowly looked up at the brilliant pillar of light sparkling through the tower. 'Yes! Yes! Yes!' he thought excitedly, running from the room and out onto the adjacent roof. Looking as high up as he could, Anden traced the path of the light from the tower all the way up through the dreary clouds in the sky. It shone like a second sun, illuminating the dreadful sky like precious gold sparkling within a murky river. Anden stood mesmerized by the glimmering beauty, but after several moments remembered to look to the horizon. The massive wall of thorns stood higher than ever on all sides - still several miles away, but creeping closer every minute. He could hear the sounds in his mind, and it sent a shudder through his body to think of the dreadful march. Now remained only the question of who would find him first, as - though he prayed for a cavalry - only thorns loomed in the distance. Hopefully someone was still alive to see the beacon. ------------------------------------------------
One month ago an army of plant creatures (commonly called thorns) rose up out of the forest and ferociously attacked any and all sentient life in their paths. Now a massive thicket of thorns covers much of the continent, and very few people are left alive. A lone survivor named Anden has lit the legendary beacon of Granite Castle, calling for hundreds of miles to anyone still capable of fighting. With hope, a final bastion of hereos will arise and defeat this faceless menace, saving the world and creating a new legend. ----
Fill out the bio to join this thread. You can intro immediately at Granite Castle. Creativity is encouraged, but I will make you change things if they are unfitting or unfair. For reference, this is a relatively typical medieval fantasy world. Any character races are allowed, though it is preferred that non-human races are somewhat original. Lore-wise, only humanesque races live on the main continent, and anything exotic must come from another part of the world, with such races being considered 'otherworlders' and often looked down upon. Magic is common in this world, and most beings can use it. However, magic is hereditary, meaning that a person's magical abilities will most likely be some combination of their parents' abilities. For example, two fire users will almost always have a child that is also a fire user, while a fire user and a water user might have a child with steam magic. The base elements are most common, but just about any force of nature can be a type of magic. If something is particularly powerful or unorthodox, please ask first. Furthermore, magic works on a system of stamina. Each person has a pool of available magic energy, and the amount of that energy will differ naturally. Extensive training can increase a person's energy capacity. When a person uses all of their magic energy, any further magic use will drain directly from their physical stamina, which can result in severe physical damage or even death if not carefully moderated. Energy is filtered in from free-flowing essence in the world, meaning that it will slowly recharge whenever not being used. There are additional manual methods of recharging energy as well, such as consuming certain materials or drawing power from a concentrated source. The world is largely nondescript, and you're welcome to add your own ideas to it. The mainland is a large continent made up of four governing regions that are each roughly even in size. Our starting point is in the mid-east region, which is a temperate place called Mena. The continent borders the equator on the bottom side, and all climates are present on this continent, in the geographical locations you would expect them to be. Ask any questions you'd like about the world and I'll probably make up the answers on the spot. lol (Generic depiction of the world thus far: ) Failure to keep up with this thread may result in your character being controlled on your behalf. I'll only do this if it's absolutely necessary, and won't make any drastic actions or actions with long-lasting effects. The main reason I would do this is to write an alibi for a character who has been inactive for extensive amounts of time. That said, I'm very relaxed about this rule, and as long as you can post once a day or every two days you probably won't have to worry about it. Chances are this thread will be somewhat slow moving anyway. If an action is performed that I deem to be inappropriate or unrealistic I may ask you to change it or otherwise retcon it completely. Again, I'm not too strict about this, but it's necessary to keep things fair for everyone. All standard role-playing rules apply. Name: Age: Race: Gender: Appearance: (( Pictures preferred but not necessary.)) Abilities: (( Whatever magical or non-magical talents your character has. )) Short History: (( A brief explanation of the character's past, most especially the past month.)) Other: (( Anything else worth noting.)) (( Don't forget to remove the parentheses.))

Character list Player name // Character name // Age // Gender // Race // Role // Info Evan // Anden // 26 // Male // Human // Melee/attacking // A fast and skilled fighter of questionable origin. {Spoiler} Name: Anden Age: 26 Race: Human Gender: Male Appearance: Abilities: Anden is primarily a sword fighter, and augments his melee talents with his magical gift for manipulating his own momentum. He can instantly dissipate all of his momentum, or suddenly give himself a burst of speed in a specific direction. Short History: Anden is the sole survivor of a small holdout group that came together in a nearby village. He attempted to lead them to Granite Castle only to watch everyone die along the way. His past prior to recent events is something he doesn't usually care to talk about, but it definitely must have included frequent combat for him to have developed his current skills. Other: yup MonkeyandMooseInc // Poppy // 26 // Female // Rodain // Support // A quirky bard who boost teammates through magic songs. {Spoiler} Name: Poppy Age: 26 Race: Rodain (A subspecies of Human from a distant land) Gender: Female Appearance: Abilities: Poppy is a bard, her songs catering towards buffing her allies rather than actual combat. A list of her battle songs include: Titan's Chorus - Provides a 50% Strength Boost to the target(s). Lasts 15 minutes The Wind's Melody - Provides a 50% Speed Boost to the target(s). Lasts 15 minutes. The Witch's Aria - Removes all wounds from one target and inflicts them on the user instead. Short History: Poppy has kept herself busy, doing her best to blend into society and help those in need through her songs. When confronted with the Thorns initially, she'd fight back against them, using the strength she had to keep them at bay. This proved to become more and more difficult as the Thorns grew in numbers, and from then on Poppy more often fled than stayed to fight. Despite the dreary and nearly hopeless times, she's managed to keep her spirits up. Other: Poppy has a couple non battle related songs: Emotion Hymn - Changes the target(s) emotions based on the key its played in. Lasts 30 minutes The Hollow Tune - Puts the target(s) to sleep. Lasts 8 hours and/or however long the target(s) wishes to sleep. Heaven's Anthem - A burial song, said to carry the deceased's spirit onward to the Heavens. Zenguardian // Nursery Rhyme // 10* (n/a) // Male // Human // Magic/attacking // A mysterious being that draws power from fairy tales. {Spoiler} Name: Nursery Rhyme Age: Timeless (appears to be about 10) Race: Fable Gender: Male Appearance: Nursery Rhyme can alter his age as he pleases, but he prefers to take on a younger appearance. Abilities: Fairy tales do exist. At least, in this world. Nursery Rhyme is a fable that has the ability to bring other nursery rhymes from Storybrooke to life, be they a physical enhancement or another existence entirely. In order to use their power, Nursery Rhyme must recite the poems out loud. He cannot have more than one rhyme active. A list of some of his poems (and most likely the only ones I'll be using throughout the rp) includes: "A chill in December..." - Basically ice magic. "Flames all burn to ashes" - Basically fire magic. Other poems~ "From the size of a tee..." - Nursery Rhyme becomes a nightmare while the rhyme is active (grows in size, takes on a feral appearance). Rapidly drains his energy. Only uses it as a last resort. "As light as a feather..." - Grants him the ability to fly while the rhyme is active. Short History: Nursery Rhyme is a Fable. Specifically, he is the physical embodiment/overseer of a nursery rhymes, and he exists because people believe in fairy tales. Because of recent events, the existence of not only him but other Fables as well is in jeopardy. Nursery Rhyme's home of Storybrooke was made completely inaccessible due to the thorns. With the world quickly descending into peril, Nursery Rhyme decided to take up arms against the army of thorns in order to rid the world of the deadly plants. That way, the populace can be restored, giving meaning to the inhabitants of Storybrooke. Other: When he gets tired, Nursery Rhyme shrinks down to the size of a mouse before retreating into his storybook to rest. Nursery Rhyme is able to create his own poems, but none of them have meaning until a group of people give them one. Surprise! Nursery Rhyme occasionally talks in rhyme. When finished using his book, he must recite a goodnight poem/lullably. Cassiroll // Leander Papalia // 30* (120) // Male // Triclops // Melee/attacking // An unusual giant with gravity magics. Name: Leander Papalia Age: 120 (close to 30 for his race) Race: Triclops Gender: Male (he/him) Appearance: Height: 8" 4' Abilities: Leander's 3rd eye can perceive time differently, causing attacks to appear slow and allowing him a few seconds more reaction time, which help make up for his below average speed on the battle field. His main ability, however, is gravity manipulation, although he can only manipulate one object at a time (exa: he can cause an object to float or make it so heavy it crashes to the ground). The closer something is to him, the easier it is for him to make large changes to it's gravitation pull. The farther away, the less change he can cause. This requires a decent amount of mana, so he usually will stick to using his impressive physical strength and saving his mana for long distance attacks. Short History: Leander grew up on the main continent in the snowy mountains of Sana, the runt of his family and usually not taken very seriously by his family because of this. Ironically, it was his smaller stature than those of his siblings that allowed him to escape the thorns, but at the cost of their lives as bait. He's used to being walked over and prefers not to engage in useless banter. He can't stand those who are blatantly rude (he'll usually just avoid them all together) and bullies make him angry. Besides that, he is very gentle and is easily impressed and fascinated by things outside of his realm of knowledge. Other: He is relatively short for his race, since most triclops are between 9-10ft tall. He is very happy with anyone who notices his height. His normal speaking voice is very loud for non-triclops so he has developed a habit of speaking softly. When he get's excited about things he will try to express it physically rather than yelling as he's used to people being startled by his booming voice. Titee // Panna Atker // 38 // Male // Human // Ranged/other // A rugged travelling rogue. Name: Panna Atker Age: 38 Race: Human Gender: Male (He/Him/His) Appearance: Abilities: Years of traveling on his own has left Panna a skilled survivalist, his tenacity and quick thinking being his strongest features. He carries a whip and knife on his person, though the latter is used more for utility than combat. Panna has weak magic affinity and a small pool of magical stamina. He has the ability to manipulate metals, though he is limited to small ones such as coins and nuggets. He usually does so by shooting them at high velocities and with precise accuracy- as Panna is a prided marksman. Short History: Panna originated from Tora, but at age 13 he was drafted into the military and never saw his homeland again. It was at 17 he lost his arm and left combat, choosing to live the life of a traveler ever since. Despite his new freedom, Panna never returned to Tora despite traveling all across not only the Mainland, but to into the realms of the otherworlders. Other: Panna has developed some inhuman mannerism. VirusHasBeenDeleted // Storm Fly // 11 // Female // Human // Summoning // A naive young girl with a giant knight guardian. Name: Storm Fly Age: 11 Race: Human Gender: Female Appearance: Abilities: She Can Summon Her Knight (Her Doll) To Fight For Her, The Knight Has A Sword And Shield And Is 10 Meters High) Other: Since She Lived Alone With Her Parents She Doesn't Understand A Lot Of Human Mannerisms And Humans Entertainment Like Jokes. Short History: Storm Fly Lived In The Harsh's Part Of Sana Where The Are Always Snow Storms, Her Parents Both Had The Ability To Summon Monster To Help Fight Them. Since Storm Fly Lived In Such Harsh Conditions She Lived By Herself With Her Mother And Father. One Day Her Mother Told Her To Hide In The Basement Until She Came Back. Hours Turn To Days And Days Turn Into Weeks But Storms Fly's Parents Did Not Come Back To Tell Her To Come Out, So She Disobey Her Mother And Left The Basement To Find Her House Destroyed All She Could Find Was Her Knight Doll. As Storm Fly Started To Cry She Saw A Bright Light The Shined Even Against The Harsh Icy Snow. Snow Decided To Follow The Light Since Her Gut Was Telling Her To Follow It. She Picked Fights Against The Thorns Here And There And Learning Her True Potential Of Her Powers. Schribbit // Nyle Stonto // 21 // Female // Human // Magic/attacking // A spunky fire user who slightly hunts. Name: Nyllida (Nyle) Stonto Age: 21 Race: human Gender: she/her Appearance: (5'8'') Abilities: Fire mage, generally physically capable with upper body strength, carpentering, hunting(slightly) Short History: Nyle grew up with two younger siblings, second most magically talented of the three, being weaker than her younger brother but much stronger than her younger sister. There was sibling drama between herself and her sister. She was very close with her brother, who was the youngest. When the thorns came, her brother was the first to die of their trio by overexerting his magic to protect their sister. Nyle and the sister then had to team up and work together to run from the thorns, and for the majority of the month they were successful, until a little over a week ago they were once again overwhelmed by the thorns. Nyle managed to escape but not before her sister died. After using her fire magic to escape at a faster pace (like rocket shoes but not) she was able to carry her sister away and bury her. Nyle didn't have much to keep going for after this, getting by hunting with her fire magic and continuing to run from the thorns. She saw the beacon and was drawn to it in hopes of helping other survivors, since she can no longer help her younger siblings. Other: She was a carpenter before the thorns and carries around her work hammer and other supplies in her bag. She also likes to collect things believing every object metaphorically holds someone’s love. She thinks liars are the worst and hates when people are taken advantage of. Emily // Vel'Ari Gorromir // 32* (155) // Female // Altaran Aelfin // Melee/other // A blunt scientist with unfortunate plant traits. ((Gotta make good on my promise then =,) )) Name: Vel'Ari Gorromir Age: 155 (32 human years) Race: Altaran Aelfin Gender: female Appearance: Height: 7"6' Abilities: Her arms are incredibly strong, and can extend out from her body in the form of flexible branches and vines, used to choke and hit enemies. Short history: Vel'Ari was always very protective of her home. She was born of two nature magic users, and was chosen by her clan due to her magic ability to train to become a guard. This bred her militant and authoritarian nature. She protected her sacred land with her life, using the nature around her for protection. One day, when she decided to badly mix nature with science, she mutated herself horribly, creating her arms and the leaves coming from her left eye. She was cut off from using all nature for magic aside from the tree bark and vines on her mutated arms due to this. When the thorns took her home and most of her clan, she was utterly crushed and had nowhere to go for the longest time, and has been wondering the land in search of help. Other: if you puncture or pluck a leaf off her face, it will hurt. The Altaran clan has a reputation for being incredibly territorial, to the point where any unauthorized person stepping into their land would have been terminated on the spot. So if someone were knowledgable about they Altaran clan, they would know their reputation of unfair prejudice as murder of any poor soul that happened to walk by. Norimo // Delphi Argyris // 22 // Female // Human // Healing/support // A talented sorceress from a strict order. Name: Delphi Argyris Age: 22 Race: Human Gender: Female Appearance:Abilities: Support, specializes in healing and barriers. Her wand allows her to heal at a range, but can only be used to focus on one member when done so. Barriers may absorb blows for the targets, but the larger the barrier is crafted the less damage it may take before shattering. Short History: From a young age, Delphi was revered and honored for her healing gift- even so much as being put on a pedestal by her cloistered community. She was stowed away in a convent and was further educated in her abilities in hopes she would one day lead the establishment, despite voicing little opinion in the matter herself. When called upon, she performed her duties with utmost precision as was expected of her. When the thorns came the convent desperately struggled to keep itself together, and thus sent Delphi to become their "savior" upon sighting the beacon's signal.
Other: While somewhat carrying a stern demeanor, she seems to grow excited over small things. She likes to draw as well, but is embarrassed about showing her artwork. Chapter 1. -The thorns appear, attacking anyone they encounter. -The thorns slaughter most of civilization while expanding across the continent. -One month into the carnage, one man survives a journey inland. -Anden lights the legendary beacon at Granite Castle in the East region. -Various survivors follow the beacon and arrive at the castle. -The unlikely group introduce themselves and get to know each other. -A massive attack begins unexpectedly. Battle 1.

Part one: The Beacon's Light -------------------------------
Anden sat motionless overlooking the castle's front gates. Tendrils of ivy covered the walls as if to taunt him. It had been a short while since he'd lit the tower beacon, and most of the excitement of anticipation had since faded. Now he tiredly waited for whomever might show up... if anyone was coming.

Poppy's Minuet - Ends the effects of all songs before it.
Poppy jauntily skipped through a thicket of trees and bushes, plucking each string of her prized lute and tuning the instrument to her liking. With a light strum, she let out an audible giggle, clearly satisfied with the result of her fine tuning. From then on, her skip switched into a brisk walk, the woman playing a familiar tune while singing along. "Oh Castle of Granite, Castle of Yore. May your walls provide safety from the terror and gore~" She sung, having picked up the tune from a fellow bard a few weeks back before the man met his untimely demise. "We pray for a hero, worthy of gold~! To push back these beasts, and....and... No that line comes later..." Poppy froze in place, a puzzled look on her face. "Wait... how did that go again..... OH! Yeah!" She began strumming again as she continued towards the palace. "A Hero of which our legends fortoooold~!" After humming the new tune, along with her personal favorite Emotion Hymn, she arrived at Granite Castle. The building was much larger than she'd expected, having never seen a castle this close before. Her eyes shone with wonder at the strange beauty in the structure's decrepit state. "I should write a song about this!" She whispered excitedly to herself before noticing a man standing at the castle gates. Her smile widened at the sight of another being, the girl waving over to him. "Hellooooooooo~!" Poppy called out as she approached the man. "Did you light the beacon!? Isn't it gorgeous the way it lights up the sky?" She chimed cheerfully.

EDIT - Made some changes! I just typed in whatever before to see what would get accepted, then I would sculpt him based off of what was allowed. As of now, I basically removed a lot of his rhymes and made all of the ones that are left original. Let me know if I need to tweak him some more! Name: Nursery Rhyme Age: Timeless (appears to be about 10) Race: Fable Gender: Male Appearance: Nursery Rhyme can alter his age as he pleases, but he prefers to take on a younger appearance. Is about 4'5". Abilities: Fairy tales do exist. At least, in this world. A list of some of his poems (and most likely the only ones I'll be using throughout the rp) includes: "A chill in December..." - Basically ice magic. "Drown thy regalia..." - Basically light magic. Can be used when he shrinks. When finished using his book, he must recite a goodnight poem/lullably.
Nursery Rhyme silently flew through the cool air, his cloak billowing around his tiny frame. He could view his destination just up ahead, the light from the beacon at Granite Castle piercing heaven bound through the sky. According to the legends of old, when the pillar of light breaches the darkness, it is a call to unite the people of the world. It'd been over a hundred years since the last time the beacon was lit, he recalled. Squinting his eyes as he soared through a patch of clouds, Nursery Rhyme found himself at the tower. He could see movement below him and dove down to join the two guardians at the foot of the castle. "Hello, guardians. It is a pleasure to meet you both." he said, giving a slight bow. Then, addressing the musician, he said "The light from the beacon is dazzling, yes. You are right!"

Anden hopped up with a start, having been lost somewhere in the distant sky. He looked down at Poppy in some sort of shock, never having expected someone to arrive so quickly. "Y-yeah! I lit the beacon." he explained. "I didn't... know if it would work." Anden admitted, looking back and forth across the unwelcoming horizon. He briefly paused once more before returning his attention to the newcomer and taking on an excited demeanor again. "I'm so glad someone showed up! I'm Anden. Who are you?"
(( Not sure how I feel about that character, Zen. He has a lot of different abilities disguised under one, and it almost feels like too much. On top of this he has the separate ability to change appearance. Magic is primarily based on natural forces as I explained in the first post, so in order to perform all of those different actions he would have to be making use of every single distinction of magic, which kind of bends the lore. I could live with those things, but the other thing that bothers me somewhat is the concept of using historical nursery rhymes from Earth when this thread takes place in a fantasy world. It's a good and unique character, but in its current state I'm not sure it fits the theme of this world. I would prefer that he's adjusted in some ways. ))

Leander slowly inched his way onto the scene, his hands at his sides and his head lowered--if only to be directed at those already at the front gates. It sounded like he was whispering when he spoke, but his voice rang at a normal volume and was perfectly clear. "Hello." Was all that he murmured, lifting his chin to the sky and examining the beacon that had brought him here in the first place. "It's been an odd month." He declared before his gaze settled back on the three before him. "Anden." Leander repeated the name that he'd heard moments before. "I am Leander the triclops. It is very hot." He seemed to add the last part absentmindedly, already focusing his attention on the ivy on the castle walls. "I'm going to touch this now." He said, again to no one, before reaching out and doing just that. "Good texture." He continued to pet the ivy as though it were some sort of animal.

She let her lute fall to the side, letting out a light chuckle as she did so. "Sorry, I'm not great and coming up with lyrics on the spot! My name i-" She was cut off by the sudden appearance of an enormous man, the figure towering over both Anden and Poppy. "Dear Gods, he's enormous! He must have a huuuuuuge- OH YEAH, I was introducing myself!" She turned back to the man she'd originally been engaging and held her hand out. "I'm Poppy! Poppy the Bard! Its a pleasure to meet you, sir! And you too, mister giant!" She called over to Leander.

"It is nice, isn't it?" Anden said in reference to the light, taking a few seconds to glance up at it over his shoulder. A moment later another voice entered the vicinity, and the survivor turned once more to the front, taking in the appearance of the growing posse. Now they were four, and amusingly enough their height range seemed to vary wildly from childlike to absolutely massive. Anden himself was somewhere in the middle, at a modest height a little under six feet.
"Welcome to Granite Castle, everyone!" the fighter cheered "It should be safe here... for now." a dreary look crossed his face at the thought, but was quickly brushed away. "Did all of you come alone? I'm also alone - it's good to see living faces!" he mused.

She began plucking and tuning her lute again when Anden asked a question to the group, Poppy having to halt her 'work' to think about this question. A grin spread across her face as she turned to Anden. "Uuuuuuh, yeah! I guess I did come alone, heheh..." She muttered out before putting on a bigger smile to mask her darker thoughts. "Everyone I traveled with is dead now!" Her chipper voice and smile seemed to portray that she was happy about this fact, but quickly continued. "But I'm sure their in a better place now! Better than dealing with all the Thorns, yeah?" She nervously laughed as she began playing her Emotion Hymn once more, humming along to the tune.

((gonna make sure he's clear before posting))

"All of the residents of Storybrooke have been trapped," Nursery Rhyme said, floating a bit higher into the air to make sure the new giant guardian doesn't mistakenly injure him. "I am also alone. It is most definitely nice to see other people, yes. You are right!" Nursery Rhymes attention was drawn to the giant, who opted to stand near the castle walls. He tilted his head quizzically at his actions. "Is the the first time you've seen ivy, mister giant?"

(( Hey, that's that one character. Yeah, he's clear lol. ))
Anden shifted his gaze to the overgrown horizon once more. It had become a habit to keep an eye on it after so many bad experiences.
"I'm glad you all made it here okay." Anden said in a somewhat distant way. The ground trembled slightly underneath them - a now common occurance due to the massive root systems growing so rapidly. "I was afraid no one would show up." Anden continued unconcerned. "I don't suppose you've all heard the story about this place?"

The world is... scary now. I am... surprised you were able to make it to this tower in one piece. You must be quite strong." Nursery Rhyme took this time to get a good look at who he assumed was the one who lit the beacon. The man was physically fit and wielded a decent sized sword. Judging by his choice of clothing, Nursery Rhyme initially thought the man to have no affinity for magic, but upon closer inspection determined that he must have some form of 'augmentation' ability for him to leave his midriff exposed. "And you must also be very brave. Was this your idea?" he asked Anden, referring to lighting the beacon.
