Welcome to Crawford’s Home for Afflicted Children. We pride ourselves on being open to Afflicted children of all kind and providing a home for them until new guardians can be established. Since the outbreak, many have turned away their own family members who have developed the symptoms of the damned, but not us. We are all the Creator’s children, and we can all be saved. No child will be left to suffer alone.
We shall suffer together.
~Keeper Carmella Rules:1.No godmodding or auto hitting. 2.Only 10 posts per day. It is recommended you try and post at least once a day in order to keep up and keep the RP active.
3.You are allowed two characters, however your first character MUST be an anthro character of some sort (see anthro character specs). Your second character can be a staff member or parent (see parent/staff specs). Staff may be introduced immediately, parents may not. 4.The theme of this rp is mystery/creepy/drama. Please keep that in mind and try and play accordingly. 5.Settings will be establish at the beginning of each scene. If you would like to extend past the established setting perimeters, please inform the host. 6.Time period is ‘Victorian’ based. However, you are not on Earth. No electricity/cars/ect. Design your characters accordingly. 7.No themes of sexual molestation/harassment are allowed in this RP. Characters Specification:(REQUIRED) Anthro Character-Must be between the ages of 5 and 17. -Must be some kind of anthro character. Mythological creatures are allowed (unicorns, dragons, ect.) but NO humanoid mythological creatures or original species. If I haven’t heard of it you must show me proof it exists. -This should be your main character and focus for this RP. -Characters may have abilities relating to their species (ex: strong defense for turtles, incredible speed for rabbits, ect.). Note that fighting MIGHT happen, but nothing too intense since these are children.Your Keeper will always be more powerful than anything your character can do. 1-2 Abilities are recommended, up to 3 are allowed. ( OPTIONAL) Staff Member-Staff MUST be fully human. -You cannot be a higher ranked staff member. Ask me about a position you would like. -18+. -All staff members were previously children at the orphanage who were not adopted. They could have gone out into the world afterwards, had their own lives, families, ect, but somehow they ended up back here and working. They remember nothing from being at the orphanage. They might not even realize they grew up here. -Staff members no longer have their animal-like additions but retain their abilities from before. -Exa Positions: Maid, Cook, Janitor, Gardener, Farmhand, Nanny (for nursery), ect. (OPTIONAL) Prospective ‘Parent’.-Parents MUST be fully human. -Cannot be introduced until later established. At a certain point I will ask for all those involved how many plan to have a parent. You will not be able to add them later on past that point. -Must be at least 25yrs old. The Affliction Forty years prior, a strange disease spread among the younger generations. Any under the age of 18 suffered from strange mutations that caused unnatural abilities as a result. Many were frightened by these children. Thousands were slaughtered in fear. It took the first two decades before cures started being researched, but those who still suffered from the disease were seen as Unclean and Undeserving. And although it became illegal to lash out against these poor souls, many were abandoned to the elements or butchered behind closed doors. Orphanages began popping up to specifically protect and save these children until they were either adopted into more caring families or were old enough that the sickness passed. About 50% of children suffer from the affliction. Most are born with the Affliction, a few develop it later on. Once a child becomes 17 they start losing their animal attributes slowly. It is usually a painful process. Not all survive. Higher mortality rates for those with extreme mutations. Powers are retained after the animal parts are gone, but some abilities may be lost during the transition. A few aspects of the animal may remain that are small such as hair color, sharper nails, fangs, unnatural height, ect. This would only apply to your character if you are playing a staff member or a parent that used to be one of the afflicted. The Orphanage [Setting] -A four story building, plus the basement and attic. The attic is used for a nursery for those born with afflictions. The floor below that is for staff and parents who are staying to see what it is like to ‘live’ with the children. The third and second floor are bedrooms for orphans. The first floor is the mess hall/reception area/recreation room/kitchen/washrooms and other misc. rooms. The basement is off limits. A creek runs along the property that turns into a small pond near the garden. There is also a small garden in the back and a barn that holds one cow, several chickens, and some pigs. A few cats and dogs wander the premise, but are not supposed to be taken indoors. -Security at the orphanage is relatively high. It is more lenient outdoors then indoors, so only the most trusted orphans are allowed to work in the garden or barn. There are a few hours each day that children are allowed to play outside. During this time outdoor security increases while indoor security decreases. Children nine and under do not have to study and instead are allowed to wander the halls or play in the recreation room. The mess hall is also used for a school room for children fourteen and below. Children fifteen and above are expected to work in the kitchen (baking goods to sell) or doing misc. Tasks around the building such as mending clothes, running errands, fixing toys, ect. Some more trusted children are allowed to get jobs off the premise. Visual representations of the rooms are here.Religion There are two main deities in this world. Yemis is the main god, commonly referred to as ‘the Creator’. They are believed to have created all living creatures on the planet. The second god is Erasil. He is believed to have created everything physical that has no life. Most worship Yemis, but those who worship Erasil believe that the Afflicted are a sign that the apocalypse is coming and that Erasil is attempting to build an army, but failed to properly create super humans and created some strange mix instead. Because of this, both religions are terrified of these children, thinking those who are not Afflicted are destined to die in the new world. *NOTE: The Gods of this world have not been proven to exist. They simply have been passed down for centuries and are taken as truth by most in the world.
Time Period/World This world is based on Victorian aesthetics, but is less technologically advanced than Earth. The planet name is ‘Umia’ and developed very similarly to how Earth did, with humans developing in the last few thousand years and already causing war and famine to take hold. There are two moons and five other planets in the solar system: Onope, Ulappe, Roona, Pexis, and Zuuk. School isn’t treated as essential, but younger children often study anyways. Winters are longer in this part of the world with short mild summers and springs. Food can be scarce during the colder months. The city the children live in is called Loctin. Initial Setup Your child has just arrived at the orphanage from either a transfer or a recent admission to orphan life (exceptions can be made if either of these options do not work, please ask the host). They wait in the reception hall for an authority figure to greet them. Orphan Character Sheet:
Name: Theodore Leland Nickname: Theo Age:12 Height: 54" (4.5') Species:Hawk Abilities: incredibly keen vision (he can see things that are really far away and notice things most would overlook), flight (but his wing is broken so he claims he can't). Pronouns:He, him Other information: Theo came into the orphanage claiming that he was abandoned, but he actually ran away from home. He spent 2 months on the street, moving from town to town, pickpocketing in the streets and hiding in fields, alleyways, etc. He's a free spirit- or at least wants to be- and he doesn't intend to stay in one place for very long. Theo doesn’t quite understand what to say to kids his age because he’s never had friends before, so it's easy for him to say things that come across as rude or bullying. He likes oatmeal with dried fruit, books, and spying on people from a distance.

Unfortunetly, her familly's reputation fell drasticaly after people learned about her existence and that caused alot of hate from other rich famillies toward the LeBlanc familly. That conflict caused her familly to lose their buisness making Renette feeling guilt of what she caused. Carmella carefully smoothed out the back of her hair, looking at herself in her dresser mirror to make sure her braid was still tightly bound before placing her hat atop her head. Another group of children would be arriving shortly, and of course she'd immediately been reassigned from the bunch that she was just starting to get to know. A frown started to creep onto the edges of her lips, as if often did now. The newest batch was always her responsibility, while other Keeper's stuck with some of their children for their whole orphanage life. She missed the connections she used to be allowed in the earlier days.
But no time to dwell on nostalgic memories. The carriage would be arriving shortly.
A quick knock on the door confirmed this. Not another moment later the door burst open without waiting for her reply and a short, vibrating bunny boy stood in its wake. "Keeper Carmella, they're here!" He cried out excitedly, before skip-hopping away without giving her a chance to say a word.
Carmella sighed, stood up quickly, and tipped her hat back before exiting the room and making her way to the stairs. No doubt Earnest would already be in the main hall, bouncing and wearing out the carpets.
She entered the reception hall quietly, her hands at her sides in light fists. A quick nod to each of the staff members that had come out to welcome the new children, as well as the orphans who'd been selected for the welcoming committee. "Best behaviors." Her tone was rather sharp. She never knew what to expect anymore.
The large front doors opened with a bang! as they collided with the walls. A strong gust of chilly night air pooled in with the bodies. Earnest approached the carriage driver and gave him the money Carmella had entrusted him with. There was a moment of uneasy silence as she waited for everyone to be fully settled.
"...Welcome," She began, a smile almost forming before being diminished back to a stoic expression. "My name is Carmella Vérone. I will be your Keeper during your stay with us here... Our Head Mistress will be down shortly, please make yourselves comfortable while we wait for her. Members of the welcoming committee will come to greet you. Familiarize yourselves with them, they'll be your guide when I cannot."

Machi stood at attention as the mistress passed her by, a warm smile plastered across her face, despite the harsh tone of Carmella's voice stinging her ears. She simple giggled at the woman's attitude and gave her a bow. "Only the best for you, my lady~!" She cooed, her words smooth like velvet. She followed after Carmella, incredibly eager to see what children would be filling the orphanage with newfound excitement this time around. As she stood in the main hall, she couldn't help but chuckle at Earnest's excitement. "Well, aren't you adorable~!" She chimed, smiling at the boy "Eager to make friends, I suppose?"
Archie crawled his way out of the carriage rather quickly, not wanting to spend any more unnecessary time in that cramped space. His body wasn't exactly built for tight spaces. As he made his way into his new 'home' for Gods know how long, he was greeted by a rather stern woman, an eager rabbit...child, and what appeared to be a maid. Archie averted eye contact and backed himself towards the corner of the room, showing no interest in interacting with any of these strangers.

“Thief! Somebody, stop that child!”
Theo bolted down the streets of Loctin, one hand trying to keep his cap from flying off of his head, the other gripping a small loaf of bread. Two adults chased him, brows furrowed and hands outstretched trying to grab the little afflicted boy. Theo’s instincts were urging him to spread his wings, but he continued to make his escape on foot.
After the market was out of sight and his pursuers were far behind, Theo was given a moment to breathe. Shoving the bread into his mouth, the scruffy boy figured he’d need to lay low for a while. He had only been in Loctin for a couple days and he was already getting into trouble. At this point, trying to leave the city that same day would be such a pain. People might still be looking for him.
He looked around the corner from his hiding spot to see a group of children getting ready to go inside a building across the street. But not just any children. They were just like him. Afflicted. And they seemed to be going inside…. an orphanage?
Theo grinned and quickly made his way to the group while he had the chance to blend in. This was way better than sitting in an alleyway starving for two days. ------------- No one seemed to notice that the winged preteen had showed up out of nowhere. And if they did, they weren't saying anything to him about it yet. Theo tried not to look too out of place among the newcomers, which was surprisingly easy. He definitely looked the part with his patched-up cap and jacket and unkempt feathers. He knew exactly what to say, too. It was no secret that children like him were abandoned practically on a daily basis. He would just say that the same thing happened to him and that he was so distraught that he couldn’t even remember his surname. A quick look at his new surroundings told Theo that he’d be in good hands here. There was no sign of disorder, no sign of wreckage. He then glanced at the other arrivals, taking note of their conditions and the nervous look on their faces. None of them seemed to have hawk wings like his… ah well. It's not like that mattered. Theo shrugged it off and began to look for a seat until- (( magisterkami))
